Student Profile: Lace Cogan

Recently the CATC Design School hosted an exhibition for it's graduating students. I always like to get to these events to get a glimpse of the next generation of designers and drink free beer.

One student's work that really caught my eye was that of Lace Cogan. Of all that I saw, her work was the most professionally executed, and well inline with industry standards. It checked all the boxes in my list for awesome design - minimal, thoughtful, engaging and memorable. I contacted Lace to learn more about this up-and-comer and served up some questions.

What was your most difficult challenge while studying at CATC and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I faced was overcoming my self doubt. Questioning yourself constantly is a by product of being a creative person and if handled in a healthy way is great for your growth. My teachers were very instrumental in helping me break through this and the best advice I was given was to “write hot, edit cold”. Get all the crap out and make room for good ideas. Also the satisfaction of finishing this course has given me great confidence in my ability. If someone compliments my work I really appreciate it and if they’ve got something constructive to say that’s even more valuable to me!

What areas of graphic design are you most interested in and why?

I’m inspired a lot by Typography, I love seeing a piece that is entirely done in Type. Also illustration, it’s a skill I am developing and I am constantly in awe of the amazing work that is out there! Also meeting some very talented illustrators at CATC has encouraged me to really give it a go!

What influences your design aesthetic?

I definitely have two sides to my design personality. I adore light monochromatic colours, clean space with structure but on the flip side I also love bold colour, textures and “homemade” design.

Which designers do you admire/inspire you?

Gemma O’brien is a truly talented designer! Her work has a real sexy edge to it. Also I follow her on instagram and always have a laugh at her ‘spew bag challenge’ drawings…check them out they’re great. Also (if it doesn’t sound to cheesy) one of my lectures Jeremy Lord, I love his work and having been able to meet him and be taught by him I appreciated art and illustration in a new way. He talked a lot about how hard he worked to get where he is but his style has this effortless feel about it that I’m pretty sure he was born with!

What are some of your hobbies outside of design?

Reading! I’m total book nerd…as in fiction. My latest read was the Game of Throne series and I devoured those in a matter of weeks…for anyone who has seen the size of those books would understand what it means to read that fast!

What are your plans for the future now that you have graduated?

Get a job! Being a student was amazing but I am ready to get back into the workforce. Ideally I’d like to work somewhere I can be mentored and continue learning.

What is some advice you can impart to fellow design students?

I cannot stress this enough…BE ORGANISED! Seriously there are moments when things can get overwhelming and with some simple planning your life as a student can be a lot easier.

Also I noticed my teachers appreciated this and I developed good relationships with them and they were happy to refer me for internships and had good things to say about me when asked by visitors from the industry. (This comes in handy when you are looking for a job!)

Lace notes her biggest influences are her brothers - coming from a creative family and spending time with them has given her an appreciation for design.
