artist

Toast recently came across the work of creative visual designer and communicator Tess Guinery. Tess embarked on her creative career following a previous life as a dancer and choreographer. Creating a slew of beautiful designs, styling and imagery, Tess balances life as a freelancer with being a mum, and does so enviously. We’re obsessed with her use of greenery in styling, her creative patterns, bold colours and the appearance of real life throughout her work.

The long story

01.When did you realise you were creative?

At a very young age, my mum cultivated it, it has always just been a way of seeing life.

02.What do you currently do for work?

Graphic design + Visual Communicator — I dabble in photography and styling.

03.Have you always worked in this field?

Only for the past 7 years, before that I was a dancer/choreographer.

04.What inspires you the most at present?

My new beach shack. We just re-located to Palm Beach, GC — Every wall is a different colour and it just feels right. It’s spurring much creativity.

05.Your favourite project to date?

Working on Lagoon to the moon Emag, a recent personal project. There was no rules!

06.Talk us through an average work day?

Wake up, coffee, beach, outdoor play time with my 2 year old girl Peaches Wilde then tackling the spontaneous bouts of quiet moments to create and design amongst the ins and outs of what the day brings — random visitors, pop ins, emails and changing nappies! ha!

07.Who are your biggest style influences?

Not one person in particular but more so I feel inspired by the 70’s and 90’s mixed in with a few locations Miami, Santa Monica and a dash of boho vibe — add some patterns in the mix and there you have it, a recipe for some serious inspo.

08.Your idea of a dream project?

Unlimited time, funds, natural light, good vibes, great people, food, tunes and something worth putting hands to. I love hands on projects where I can step away from the computer for a while.

09.The biggest challenge in your career?

Running a business and trying to switch my brain off.

10.What are you looking forward to?

I’m headed to the US in August with my gal squad — we are all freelancers — One is a photographer, another is a film maker and one is a stylist. We are hitting up LA to create, dream, laugh, drink coffee and be spontaneous! Words can’t articulate the butterflies of excitement I have! We booked it because flights were cheap and I’m glad we were all unified in our “YES, Let’s do this”.
